What is TAX FREE?
In the recent past, purchases during vacations in a foreign country have become very popular, but most of tourists do not even realize that now they have an opportunity to save on purchases and get full refund of VAT (only for the citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU)). Such a system is called “Tax free” (Translated from English – “duty-free”) and has been in vogue for a very long time in the EU and some other European countries.
In fact, “tax free” is a system that facilitates refund of VAT on purchases to foreign nationals at the end of their stay in the country, where these purchases were made.
The refund amount of tax depends on country-wise rate of VAT and fluctuates in the range of 7 to 20%. Minimum amount of purchase, depending on which the tax is refunded, also varies from country to country. In Italy, it is 155 EURO (13 to 22% tax), compared to other countries: Spain 91 EURO (16% tax), Germany 25 EURO (10% tax). In some countries, the coverage of “tax free” may be different depending on product group.
If you plan to stay in Rimini, then, to get a refund under “tax free” system in accordance with the Italian law, you need to make purchases above 155 EURO in stores, which are covered under “tax free” system. During the trip, you must keep in mind that you cannot just buy a product at any store or supermarket and ask them to refund VAT. Store, where you shop, should be part of the “tax free” system outlets. Furthermore, to get VAT refund you need to fulfil certain formalities as listed below:
1. When you purchase, you should ask for a “tax free” bill. This bill would contain your details (name and surname), list of items purchased, their quantity, and VAT amount that must be refunded to you;
2. Purchased goods should not be opened (unsealed) till your departure from the country of purchase, otherwise you will not be refunded the tax;
3. Get your bills stamped at Customs. To do this, prior to immigration check, you need to present “tax free” bills, on which customs official will affix a special stamp;
4. After checking-in and going through immigration check, you receive the money by presenting your passport and bills at certain earmarked counters.
You must also remember that the company, processing your refund, will deduct its charges from the amount of your tax refund.
